Mike’s Gym Camp’s main man Garth Suthurst was handed the toughest fight of his life recently, and his story has shocked the Mike’s Gym family – and everyone who knows Garth – to its core. On June 1st he went into cardiac arrest and his heart stopped beating for 22 minutes. During that time, there was no blood being pumped to his brain, lungs and other vital organs, which meant he had no oxygen, no pulse and essentially died. Twice.

WHAT HAPPENED?

His friends here at Mike’s Gym, found him collapsed and worked tirelessly to resuscitate him and keep him alive until the emergency services arrived to defibrillate him. Garth’s heart began to beat again, but he remained unconscious and was transferred from the ambulance to the intensive care unit where he was on life support.

What has followed since has been the hardest time of Garth’s and all of our lives and there’s still a very long, tough and uncertain time ahead. From the ambulance, he spent five days in an induced coma, where we were all desperately willing him to wake up again. Despite the chances of survival of out of hospital cardiac arrests being as low as 8%, we never gave up on Garth and he never gave up on us; he did beat the odds and woke up six days later – a moment none of us will ever forget.

HOW IS HE NOW?

His heart is now stable and he’s currently spending his days in a cardiology ward at Costa del Sol Hospital in Marbella. Physically he’s making progress, he can walk, he is eating well (unsurprisingly!) and we are amazed and so proud of him for every day that he continues to fight. The biggest challenge he faces now is recovering from the damage done to his brain.

We don’t know the full extent of the damage yet, but what we do know is that he has no memory or recollection and doesn’t currently recognise any of us. He’s learning everything from scratch and is becoming increasingly agitated and frustrated as he´s slowly trying to make sense of the world. He desperately needs specialist neurological treatment and care outside of the hospital he is currently in.

One thing we’ve learnt over the past two weeks is that a lot of reliance is on the family for providing care here in Spain and so far, we’ve had to provide round the clock supervision. It seems there is little to no public neurological health support in place and with neither Garth nor Sorrel able to work during this arduous journey, they will have no income to support them, making this time even more difficult.

HOW CAN YOU HELP?

We are unsure how long his recovery will take – it could take months or years. But these first stages with a brain injury are crucial in the recovery process, so it’s important we get the right specialist treatment immediately, which may include transferring him to a neurology unit elsewhere. He’s already been showing his incredible spirit and strength beating the odds so far, so let’s make sure he has the best chance possible to win this fight and bring back the Garth we all know and love – a loving father to three gorgeous girls, Lily, Ash and Elle, partner, son, brother and friend to so many.

Even though these have been the darkest days, the love has shone through incredibly, united all our family and friends who  massively appreciate all the support wordwide. Garth’s Mike’s Gym Camp partner in crime and life – Sorrel Lewis, has shown nothing but courage and determination throughout, supporting Garth on his road to recovery and now is the time she needs us most.

PLEASE DONATE AND SHARE GARTH’S STORY

Our aim is to spread the word far and wide and help them as much as we can by encouraging donations on GARTH’S GOFUNDME PAGE set up by his doting sister, Rachael Suthurst, who has worked tirelessly to bring this campaign to as many eyes and ears as possible during this difficult time. Anything you can donate to Sorrel and the family will allow them to fully focus on being there for Garth. All the money raised will go towards medical bills, travel costs and whatever is needed in order for Sorrel and Garth to survive financially whilst Garth is hopefully making a full recovery.

Rachael said, “My mum said as a child I used to follow my brother around like a shadow and always looked up to him. I’ve seriously never been prouder of him right now for this fight he is putting up and I only hope I can do him proud one day if he reads this”.

Ultimate OCR and Mikes Gym Camp Marbella team up for a fun-filled action packed OCR bootcamp!

Andrea Tjarnberg  and Team Ultimate OCR came to Mikes Gym Camp Marbella last week to knuckle down to some serious pre/season OCR training on our newly extended 5 k obstacle course.

Magnus Thorhede reviewed Mikes Gym Camp Marbella — 5 star

“Great place, great people, great food. Love this place!”

The Ultimate crew took to our course for some intense interval and strongman training  as well as technique workshops for brushing up their lifting and obstacle techniques.

Set in La Cala hills, Mikes Gym is certainly not short of beautiful trail runs to choose from and the group got very well acquainted with our infamous ‘scramble hill’ route as well getting up close and personal with some heavy-ass wreak bags! The group also experienced a stunning  mountain trail up to the Mijas mountains at sunset on an active recovery excursion to the Mijas village.

Sara Jonsson reviewed Mikes Gym Camp Marbella — 5 star

“Great place with awesome coaches! If you want to challenge yourself, visit this place! You won’t regret it!”

No training camp in Marbella would be complete without a beach workout and these guys worked hard on that beach booty with lots of sandy fun in the sun.

The training camp was wrapped up with a full, timed lap of the course followed by a well earned BBQ and after party brought to us by Adris Kitchen and the rest of Mikes Gym Family.

Not satisfied with their times, 4 of the remaining camp members went on to do another timed lap early the next day smashing the previous days times! I think its pretty fair to say the Ultimate OCR boys and girls earned their place on the Mikes Gym leader boards!

Johanna Eriksson reviewed Mikes Gym Camp Marbella — 5 star

“Awesome place to play and workout! The coaches really help you out and the surroundings are so beautiful. Don’t think about it, just go there!”

Nocco camp at Mike´s Gym Marbella!

We welcomed Team Nocco to Mike’s Gym this month as part of their campaign ‘Nocco Camp España’, where a bunch of lucky winners and Nocco ambassadors got to join Nocco Spain for their first camp at Mikes Gym Marbella.

Amongst the mix were many social media celebs including Team Ritchey, a famous CrossFit YouTube channel with a hefty 50k subscribers, as well as Instagram megastar, ninja warrior and
Mikes Gym Camp ambassador, Fanny Josefine, who regularly visits our facilities to create the epic videos she shares with her 161k followers.
Their camp consisted of 4 days and 3 nights, beginning on day one with a brief introduction and a guided tour of our 4.5-kilometre assault course, led by the main man himself, Michael Ritchie.
Day 2 was spent at The Beach House in Elviria, where team Nocco took part in some beach games – Mikes Gym stylee! A favourite amongst our campers, are our team beach workouts using a variety of beach and water sport equipment from kayaks, paddleboards, paddleboats to kettlebells and giant logs! Definitely not your usual beach workouts…and it wouldn’t be a Mikes Gym workout if it was!! 😉
On Day 3 Mikes Gym Camp led the group up to the top of La Cruz mountain at Refugio de Juanar. A 6k hike with stunning views, 400m above sea level. You have to be pretty unlucky to get a bad day up there and today was no exception – Beautiful blue skies with crystal clear views to Africa. A simply stunning location that is difficult to tire of no matter how many groups we take up!  Nocco Camp España spent a good hour and a half at the top snapping various team shots and selfies for their social media accounts and shooting video clips for their vlogs.
Team Nocco had a wide variety of different fitness levels and abilities in their group,
Level and ability however, makes no difference here at Mikes Gym Camp Marbella, as we scale activities and workouts to suit. So as long as you are willing to put the work in, no matter your level, you will get on just fine here. Failure is an option, giving up is not, and Team Nocco came with exactly the right attitude to get the job done!
The camp enjoyed 3 healthy and delicious meals per day, prepared on site by the very lovely Adri of Adri’s kitchen, and on their final night, as a reward for all of their hard work, enjoyed a BBQ and end of camp party with games and prizes organised by Nocco Spain.
One of the great things about this camp was the huge mix if people from all different counties and walks of life, coming together as strangers and leaving as great friends.
We will miss you Nocco Camp España – Come back soon! #noccoenough

A last min camp booking at Mike’s Gym meant that unfortunately Mike and Gazza couldn’t make the World Finals this year, (someone has to run the gym whilst we are away racing!) So, it was Garth and Sorrel representing Team Mike’s Gym out there in Canada this time. But I am proud to report that TEAM MIKE’S GYM TOOK 13TH PLACE MIXED PRO DIVISION AT THE OCR WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS!
